Financial Engineering is a multidisciplinary field involving financial theory, the methods of engineering, the tools of mathematics and the the practice of developing a program.


Stanford University's Department of Management Science and Engineering is proud to introduce an innovative Financial Engineering Program to Hong Kong. The six-month program provides part-time training in the application of engineering methodologies and quantitative methods to finance. The program, taught by Stanford faculty in Hong Kong, is designed for those/individuals who wish to obtain positions in the securities, banking, financial management and consulting industries, or as quantitative analysts in corporate treasury and finance departments of general manufacturing and service firms.

Risk management is a rapidly evolving discipline, gaining increasing prominence across the financial industries. Our program will equip you with the tools required for effective asset and risk management, on which to build or advance your career.

The courses run each month and the schedule of delivery will accommodate even the busiest of professionals. The program provides pathways for students to earn a master's degree from Stanford or other American universities upon successful admission. We also intend to create a financial engineering community. There will also be a financial engineering community as well as seminars on Financial Engineering where industry practitioners from top investment banks will present their recent research or particular specialty. Students will hear firsthand about life in the financial world.

Featured Student: Casson Lin


  Casson Lin Ka Shun was one of the first  

  intake graduates from the Stanford

  Financial Engineering Program in Hong

  Kong. Having been admitted to the Stanford

  MS degree program for the coming fall 2009, Casson will pursue the MS study mostly part-time in Hong Kong. He will consider spending one semester at the Stanford campus.

Casson first received his bachelor degree in Business Administration from Simon Fraser University in Canada. Upon his return to Hong Kong, Casson started out his career in KPMG as an external auditor. He is currently a Cost Management Information Analyst at the Global Banking Markets, the investment arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland. His key responsibilities include evaluating and analyzing the performance of different business units and products to streamline and improve the performance of the consolidated (post acquisition of ABM AMRO) entity in Asia Pacific. He has been involved in managing and overseeing the financial and operational information. Prior to joining RBS, Casson also spent some time at the Business Management Group at Morgan Stanley overseeing the financials and managing various projects at the Information Technology department.

Casson's motivation for joining the Stanford Financial Engineering program comes from his desire to combine his strong analytical and computer skills with the interest in finance. After completing the FE program, Casson served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant providing teaching support to the classes in Hong Kong.

¡§It was definitely a challenging and stimulating experience. Nowadays companies are leaning toward hiring individuals who can be immediately productive. The Stanford FE program helped me develop a strong and smooth transition across different career alternatives.¡¨ Casson said.

Upon completion of the Stanford MS program, Casson intends to apply his analytical and quantitative skills to derivative trading and risk management of complex equity products in a leading investment bank or hedge fund.

The 5th intake is scheduled to kick off in September 2010.
